“Network Security I”
Network Security: 3 days (24 hours)
Course Overview:
This class provides the foundation for understanding the key issues associated with protecting information assets, determining the levels of protection and response to security incidents, and designing a consistent, reasonable information security system with appropriate intrusion detection and reporting features.
The purpose of the class is to provide the learner with an overview of the concepts of Information Security and Assurance. Learners will be exposed to the spectrum of Security activities, methods, methodologies, and procedures. Coverage will include inspection and protection of information assets, detection of and reaction to threats to information assets, and examination of pre- and post-incident procedures, technical and managerial responses and an overview of the Information Security Planning and Staffing functions.
Course Objectives:
• Identify and prioritize information assets.
• Identify and prioritize threats to information assets.
• Define an information security strategy and architecture.
• Plan for and respond to intruders in an information system
• Describe legal and public relations implications of security and privacy issues.
• Present a disaster recovery plan for recovery of information assets after an inci-dent.

• None
Textbook:
• M. Whitman and H. Mattord, Principles of Information Security, 3rd Edition (Course Technology, 2005).
Classroom Strategy:
The programs will include lecture and hands-on demonstrations designed to enhance the leader’s perspective and practical expertise. Several topics will discussed per day and will be covered in-depth.
Class Components:
The program is designed with six main components. Those components include: information assets, threats to information assets, security strategy and architecture, intruders in an information system, public relations implications of security and privacy issues, disaster recovery plan for recovery of information assets after an incident.
Certificate of Completion:
A Penn State University Certificate of Completion will be given and CEU’s awarded to those who have attended the 24-hour program. Evaluations will be distributed and instructor can provide follow-up discussion based on the individual’s focused action plan to determine if concepts have be learned and implemented.
