“Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)”

VOIP: Half day format (4 hours)

Course Overview:

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the basic term used for the ability to transmit voice conversations over the Internet. It takes many forms; from computer-to-computer, to computer-to-telephone, even (with the right hardware) telephone-to-telephone. It is used by large corporations such as Microsoft and IBM to support far flung call centers and by computer hobbyists to get “free telephone” service. More and more consumer VoIP services are providing this service for those with high-speed Internet connections in their homes.

The 4 hour class will cover the following topics:

1. What Is VoIP?
2. Flavors of VoIP
3. Why Go VoIP?
4. Understanding the VoIP Industry
5. Planning Your VoIP
6. Getting the Right Equipment
7. Porting or Changing? What About the Number?
8. Planning Frustration-Free VoIP
9. Installing VoIP Hardware
10. Installing VoIP Software
11. VoIP in the Home Office
12. Pocket PCs and VoIP
13. Sample VoIP Services
14. Getting the Most from VoIP
15. Potential Challenges

Classroom Strategy:
The programs will include lecture and hands-on demonstrations designed to enhance the leader’s perspective and practical expertise. All topics will be covered as stated above in course outline.

Certificate of Completion:
A Penn State University Certificate of Completion will be given and CEU’s awarded to those who have attended the 4-hour program. Evaluations will be distributed and instructor can provide follow-up discussion based on the individual’s focused action plan to determine if concepts have be learned and implemented.
